How Infographics Saved London: John Snow & the 1854 Cholera Epidemic

7:20 PM - 8:00 PM

You think good, clear data presentations are not important for medicine and just "nice-to-have"? Think again. In 1854, when London was in the throes of a terrible cholera epidemic, a brilliant data presentation (infographic) of London showing the houses of the cholera victims and the London water pumps allowed Dr John Snow (not of Winterfell) to deduce that it was one water pump that was causing the epidemic. By removing the pump handle that was the source of the bacteria, he stopped the epidemic and almost single-handedly created the medical field of Epidemiology. Hear about how it happened and see the graphic (and the pump) that launched a medical specialty and has saved millions of lives since then.
